Teaching farmers to be businessmen

out bethelBoosting sales at farmers’ markets, marketing to restaurants, finding farmland and tapping agritourism are just a few of the topics to be covered during the Business of Farming Conference set for 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa.

 

Sponsored by the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, the conference is for beginning and veteran farmers and will focus on the business side of farming, from recordkeeping to money management. Farmers will get to meet one-on-one with potential restaurant and retail buyers, and professional consultants. This year that includes an advanced track of workshops for seasoned farmers.

    art theplaceMary Harper was quite possibly the first real friend I made when I moved to Western North Carolina.

    With my apartment a few blocks away from the Water’n Hole Bar & Grill in Waynesville, I ventured down there at night trying to see what was up in this town, trying to make some friends, and trying not to feel alone and isolated in a new place where I was unknown to all who surrounded me. Harper, with her million-dollar smile and swagger, immediately made me feel at home.
