Family canoe event scheduled

out canoeThe fourth annual Old Cullowhee Canoe Slalom is scheduled to begin Sept. 8 at 9 a.m., just upstream from the bridge in Old Cullowhee. This is a family-friendly competition for amateur paddlers on a calm section of the Tuckasegee River. The course includes negotiating nine gates on flat, moving water.

Open canoes, life jackets and paddles are available for participants who do not have their own equipment. Participants are invited to practice on the course Sept. 7 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. There is an entry fee of $5 per person.
