A costume character ball will be held during family night at 6 p.m. Oct. 25 in the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva. Children are invited to come dressed as their favorite story character. There will be snacks, crafts and activities like bowling, twister, beanbag toss and more.
There’s no place like home. Amid my first few weeks living in Western North Carolina, there were times I got homesick. Though I have bounced around the country for many years now, I, too, have moments where I start to miss things familiar to me.
For whatever reason — the leisurely pace of days, the break in my work routine, the annual trip to the coast with my children and grandchildren — summer alters my reading habits. As for the students I teach, summer affords me the opportunity to read as I wish, to browse with less intent through bookstores or library stacks. Here are a few of the books that have passed through my hands these last two weeks.
