Franklin’s new and returning councilmembers were recently sworn into office and immediately started conducting business during the December regular meeting.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Billy Mashburn discussed with The Smoky Mountain News his continued goals and vision for his hometown of Franklin.

After weeks of public comment, opposition by religious leaders and appeals by the local business community, a controversial “Brunch Bill” ordinance passed the Canton Board of Aldermen/women Oct. 26.

As the candidate sign-up period for November’s municipal elections opens at noon on Friday, July 7, voters in most municipalities will start to learn who’s in, who’s out, who’s moving on and who’s moving up.

The town of Franklin Board of Aldermen will now officially be referred to as the Franklin Town Council after the board voted 3-2 to change its charter.

“What’s an alderman?” is a common question town officials hear when trying to explain what they do to members of the public.

The term alderman is defined as a member of a city legislative body, but it literally translates as “old man” in old English.
