New Waynesville recreation director has marketing expertise

Rhett Langston with the Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Department has been selected from a pool of 63 applicants to become the new Waynesville Recreation Director.

Langston will take over the position when current director Mike Smith retires this fall.

Langston has been with Buncombe County since December 1992, when he was hired as athletic director. In his current position he handles all publicity and marketing of departmental activities and has served as the speaker for engagements and presentations. He created a new marketing strategy for the department which included press releases, brochures, updating the Web site, school flyers, advertising and photography.

Langston has been the host of television shows “Parks Alive” and “Your Buncombe County” broadcast on Buncombe County Television. He has served as the manager of the Buncombe County Sports Park, North Buncombe Park, Lake Julian Park and all outdoor pools. In addition, he serves as the department’s liaison with various soccer and youth leagues.

In his administrative work, he assists the director in the daily budget responsibilities, oversees the grants and sponsorship programs and is responsible for the daily operation of the department in the absence of the director.

In her letter of recommendation for Langston, Annette Wise, manager of Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Services, wrote: “I know this position would be a wonderful opportunity for him and a good move for your Town. I can tell you, Rhett has been a stellar performer for us.”

“I am very excited about this opportunity and I look forward to working with the staff and serving the citizens in this area,” Langston said. “I consider it an honor to be a part of it. My family and I are thrilled about becoming a part of the Waynesville community. We are so pleased with this area.”

Langston is an Alabama native and received a bachelor’s degree in public relations and marketing from the University of Alabama in 1988. In 1990, he received a M.S.S. degree in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne, Ala.

Langston and his wife Lisa have a 5-year-old son, Jaxson. They presently live in Weaverville but have begun searching for a home in the Waynesville area. Langston will begin working with the Townof Waynesville on July 3.

This spring, current Recreation Director Mike Smith, a 21-year veteran in that role, announced his plans to retire.
