Locals take gold and silver in Assault on BlackRock

out assaultblackrockThe fifth annual Assault on BlackRock trail race is now in the rearview mirror, with 82 brave souls battling freezing temperatures frosted with snow and ice to complete the grueling 7-mile race.

The race takes off from Pinnacle Park in Sylva and climbs a steep trail up to Blackrock Mountain in the old Sylva watershed before returning back to the trailhead. Times spanned the gamut from 1 hour, 14 minutes to 3 hours, 17 minutes.

Top finishers were:

• Eli White, 28, Cullowhee, 1:14:06

• Kevin Fitzgerald, 56, Waynesville, 1:20:02

• David Workman, 44, Hendersonville, 1:24:15

The event raised $2,406 for The Community Table, a nonprofit in Sylva that serves hot meals and operates a food pantry for those facing food insecurity.
