Behling art exhibit opening

art behlensThe Jackson County Arts Council will host an art exhibit opening for Dawn Behling, the 2014-15 Regional Artist Project Grant Recipient, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in the Rotunda Gallery of the Jackson County Public Library in Sylva.

Behling is a mixed-media artist who is inspired by nature, color, and texture. While earning a BFA in Textile Design at East Carolina University, Behling discovered a love of screen printing, painting, and dyeing on various fibers. She continues to utilize screen-printing and her surface design sensibilities as her primary artistic outlet. The images she uses are either original drawings or photos from nature. Behling then creates screen-printed works on canvas, fabric, or paper that are embellished with watercolor, pastel, or dye.

In 2007, Behling moved to Western North Carolina to pursue an MFA in Studio Art at Western Carolina University. Since receiving her degree, Behling has continued to create art and exhibit her work in regional galleries. Behling is currently a staff member at the WCU Fine Art Museum, where she enjoys her continued interaction with the WCU art community. She has also served on the Jackson County Arts Council Board, as well as the Appalachian Art Farm Advisor.

Regional Artist Project grants are awarded to artists in all disciplines on a regional basis through a competitive application and review process. The grant awards are funded by the North Carolina Arts Council and by a regional consortium of local arts councils. Regional Artist Project grants support professional artists at any stage in their careers to pursue projects that further their artistic development.

This opening will be held in conjunction with caroling on the courthouse steps at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Western Carolina Civic Orchestra Holiday concert at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the library.
