A mobile recreation program offering outdoor recreation opportunities in communities throughout Haywood County will begin June 18, and a meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at the Waynesville Recreation Center will gather community members interested in helping make the program a success.

Base Camp on the Go will supplement local day camps, schools and community centers with relevant outdoor recreation opportunities, with a curriculum that partners with Haywood County families to encourage nature play and outdoor activity.

Base Camp on the Go Mini Camps will launch Monday, June 18, with sessions running 10 a.m. to noon on a regular rotation throughout Haywood County communities. Monday locations are yet to be determined, but camp will be at the Fines Creek Community Center on Wednesdays, rotate between Lake Junaluska and Canton on Thursdays and come to the Waynesville Recreation Center on Fridays.

The Waynesville Parks and Recreation Department has recently added a program specialist to its staff to administer Base Camp on the Go. Colt Miller is a graduate of Western Carolina University who previously worked for the Asheville Parks and Recreation Department, where he served for eight years in capacities ranging from pool supervision to event programming to marketing.
