The Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a Lunch and Learn seminar at 11:30 a.m. March 8 at the Boiler Room Restaurant.

Tax professionals will give brief talks on topics such as how to distinguish employees versus independent contractors, individual tax identification numbers, representing taxpayers before IRS and more.

The Greater Haywood County Chamber of Commerce will join Women In Business for the third annual fashion show “Success in Your 2012 Fashions” at 11:30 a.m., March 15, at The Gateway Club in Waynesville.

John D. Goins has been named the new CEO of United Community Bank. Goins was previously the COO and lives in Hickory. Greg Hining, a 41-year banking veteran, retired in January.

Mitch Fischer has been appointed as Southwestern Community College’s next dean of health sciences. Fischer, who has served as SCC’s Respiratory Therapy program coordinator since 2007, will take over for retiring Deb Klavohn.

Mountain BizWorks, a local community lender, has received a capital grant from the Create Jobs for USA Fund. The money will help Mountain BizWorks create and sustain jobs in Western North Carolina as part of a national campaign to support community businesses in underserved communities.

James Clay Smallwood will join the MedWest Physician Network with a practice in Sylva focusing exclusively on gynecology.

Smallwood has practiced in Western North Carolina for years and previously was on the medical staff of the WestCare Health System, providing obstetric and gynecological care.

Mission Health has been selected to receive a Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant in the amount of $419,351. The program’s objective is to improve access to health care and educational services in rural communities.

Four nurses — Vicki Dalton, Laura Doolittle, Lyndie Cowan and Diane Stanley — from Angel Home Health and Hospice recently completed a two-day End of Life Nursing Education Consortium training course. This specialty training specifically addresses the unique palliative care and end of life needs of veterans.

The Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce recognized the outstanding contributions of the following people and businesses during their annual awards banquet last month: Chamber Member of the Year went to the LJB Job Corps Club; Organization of the Year went to Franklin Young Professionals; Duke Energy Citizenship Service Award went to Cowee Home Extension Quilter’s Club; and Citizen of the Year went to County Planner Derek Roland and Kyle Morgan.

Employees at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel in Cherokee, now have access to on-site health care through Healthstat, Inc., the country’s leading on-site health management provider. The clinic will help improve employee health and reduce rising health care costs. Mission Health performed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery in Western North Carolina. The procedure is a treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis who were previously considered inoperable.

Eagle Tax Breaks opened a new location on Highlands Road in Franklin. Owners Rodney and Judy Hill began preparing taxes in WNC in 1992.

J. Caleb Rogers, a Clyde native, has joined the law firm of Hutchens, Senter & Britton, P.A., as an associate. Rogers graduated from Wake Forest University in 2002 with a B.A. in politics and earned his Juris Doctor from Wake Forest University School of Law in 2005.

Dr. David Poorbaugh, his wife Kay, and Karissa will join Angel Medical Center as a pet therapy team. Karissa is a black and white King Charles Cavalier Spaniel who will be bringing smiles to patients, visitors, and staff.

The Haywood County Board of Realtors recently presented a $1,000 gift to Western Carolina University’s College of Business in recognition of the support the college’s students and faculty have provided for the board and for Haywood’s economic development initiatives.
