A new store called Frogtown Market has opened on Patton Avenue in Franklin. For seven weeks, 19 Smoky Mountain High School students were paired with mentors in departments throughout MedWest-Harris as part of the Mentor Program at the hospital. The MedWest Health System has accommodated students from Cherokee, Swain County and Tuscola High Schools in the past year.

Mission Hospital held its first annual Service Excellence Achievement Awards ceremony to honor staff members who provide high quality care to its patients. Mission Hospital, Asheville Surgery Center and seven of the Hospital’s patient care units were recognized for excellence at the 2012 Excellence in Healthcare Conference and named as four-star healthcare facilities.

MedWest promoted Brandy Wheeler to patient financial services manager for MedWest-Harris, MedWest-Swain and MedWest-Franklin. She is responsible for patient accounts, billing and system administration duties for Patient Financial Services at these three hospitals.

The MedWest Health System presented scholarships to Smoky Mountain High School students Emily Ashe, Ashlin Beck and Niki Duff at the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) Banquet at Smoky Mountain High School. MedWest also presented scholarships to Swain County High School students Patti Clark and Brittany Shuler.

Haywood Community College’s Criminal Justice Club recently donated funds to the Open Door Soup Kitchen and Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation. Both received $250 from funds raised by students.

MedWest Health System’s new obstetrician/gynecologist Mila D. Shah-Bruce will begin working with Smoky Mountain OB/GYN Associates in Sylva and Franklin on Aug. 1.
