Writing workshop offered in Waynesville

Teachers Curt and Julie Cloninger will lead a writing seminar designed to help teachers and parents teach writing to their children from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Vine of the Mountains Church on Depot Street in Waynesville

“Teaching middle and high school students to write well can be a daunting, time-consuming process,” said Curt Cloninger. “You will come away with practical tools to make you a better, more confident writing teacher.”

The workshop will focus on all three steps of teaching writing (pre-writing instruction, formative assessment, and summative assessment). Participants will learn intentional strategies and best practices for creating valuable assignments in a variety of writing genres; giving model feedback; recording audio comments; engaging students in peer- and self-evaluation; giving incremental formative feedback; and developing concise grading rubrics.

Curt Cloninger is an artist, writer and assistant professor of New Media at the University of North Carolina-Asheville where he teaches writing courses in new media theory and design history. His wife Julie is director of Deep/Young Academy, an educational organization that offers enrichment and lab classes for home-schooled students.

The cost is $20 per person and $30 per couple.
