Shapiro, the Robert Lee Madison Distinguished Professor of communication sciences and disorders at Western Carolina University, has been elected president of the International Fluency Association, which includes researchers, speech scientists and speech-language pathologists from more than 30 countries.

Participants in the Job Development Training program recently completed landscaping improvements at Webster Enterprises. Curtis Johnson, a program participant, designed new and expanded flowerbeds at the entrances and a stone walk to and around the facility’s flagpole. The two-day project involved soil preparation, planting, constructing borders and covering areas with mulch.

Russell Bigmeat Jr. from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians became the first water treatment plant operator to be certified as nationwide operator by examination through United South and Eastern Tribes’s certification. The USET certification is commissioned by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

McClure is in the first class of municipal clerks from North Carolina who are receiving the designation.
