A podcast of the Great Smoky Mountains Association, the miniseries “Sepia Tones: Exploring Black Appalachian Music” won the award for Outstanding Public Engagement during the 2023 Public Lands Alliance Partnership Awards.

It was another good year for community journalism in Western North Carolina, and writers from The Smoky Mountain News were a big part of it, taking home more editorial awards — 21 — than any other newspaper in its class.
Shaeffer recognized for service to Sylva
The Sylva Board of Commissioners recognized longtime public works director Dan Shaeffer for his nearly 20 years of service to the town during its regular meeting today. The board presented Shaeffer with a resolution honoring his contribution to the town as well as the jokingly named "Order of the Short Leaf Pine Award," a title that plays on the governor-awarded Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
Brewing success: Two WNC craft breweries win national medals
With sunshine spilling into the taproom of Currahee Brewing Company in Franklin one recent afternoon, brewmaster Taylor Yates is all smiles. A hearty beverage raised high, the sun’s rays are a cherry on top of the big news currently floating around the facility.
“For us being so new, this is a huge thing,” he said. “We’re still trying to get established. Something like this on a national level just does wonders for us. When you’re new, it really gets you that exposure and notoriety you hope for.”
