Ask Leah! The Ingles Dietitian

Sponsored: Grapefruit and medication

ingles dietitianQuestion: I have heard that grapefruit and grapefruit juice may not be good to eat/drink with some medications.

Answer: Yes, grapefruit and grapefruit juice does interact with some prescription and over the counter medications in these categories:

• Statins – to lower cholesterol

• Blood pressure medications

• Drugs for those who have had organ transplants

• Anti-anxiety medications

Related Items

• Anti-arrhythmia medications

• Anti-histamines

If you are taking any of these medications, make sure you ask your Ingles pharmacist whether they interact with grapefruit/grapefruit juice. The interaction can cause more (or in some cases less) of the drug to enter your system.
