Keller Williams seeks clothes donations
Donate gently used clothes and new school supplies at the Keller Williams off located at 2562 Dellwood Road, Waynesville, for the third annual clothes swap. The swap, hosted by Keller Williams Realty Waynesville/Maggie Valley, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14. Parents can come by the office and choose clothing for their children.
There is no charge to participate and no requirement to donate in order to receive clothes. Last year, more than 100 Haywood County school children benefited from the clothing swap, school supplies and backpacks. 828.926.5155 or emailambermillskw@bellsouth.net.
Cashiers merchants group gets proactive to attract summer business
The Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association has launched a series of promotions to enhance the summer shopping experience.
The first Saturday of the month, a Trolley Shuttle offers free rides from shop to shop in Cashiers Village in conjunction with Market Days promotions featuring various specials and in-shop events from merchants.
“Riding the trolley relieves busy day parking hassles and offers comfortable travel from one end of the village to the other,” stated Judy Gray, owner of Now and Then.
The merchants Association published a Shopper’s Guide Map that showcases shops, attractions, services and businesses from Glenville to Cashiers to Sapphire.
“It will aid anyone needing to find their way around the Cashiers Valley,” suggests Judy Brown, Bounds Cave co-owner and GCAMA President.
Next up on the GCAMA agenda is the Cashiers Valley Shopper’s Card to be introduced at the end of July. The cost of the card is $10, but the value to shoppers is hundreds of dollars.
Cashiers Valley homebuyers are now the beneficiaries of a special welcome coordinated by GCAMA, which includes baskets containing local products, coupons and information about services and needs customary for new homeowners

Harrah’s Cherokee gets fancy with Casino Arts
Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel announces a new relationship with Las Vegas-based Casino Arts Corporation in the design and construction of its new, high-tech Rotunda at the entrance to the casino.
Within the Rotunda, Casino Arts will direct and develop a feature showcase of original Cherokee storylines represented through video, sound and light. The company is producing 15 themed programs with various animations and elements that generate an exciting and high-energy visual experience.
The Rotunda is one of the newest features to be introduced as part of Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel’s $633 million expansion.
Haywood Chamber honors businesses
The Greater Haywood County Chamber of Commerce announced its annual membership awards, which honor community businesses, entrepreneurs and volunteers for their continuous support of the initiatives of the Chamber.
The 2010 Business of the Year was awarded to Champion Credit Union in recognition of their outstanding achievements in workforce development and community support. Entrepreneur of the Year was awarded to Grace Cathey of the Sculpture Garden for her innovative business concept and the awareness she has brought to the region through her art. Laura Leatherwood with Haywood Community College was named Volunteer of the Year. Rick Smith of Pioneer Mobile Home Park was named Ambassador of the Year.
The Chamber also awarded “Rulers of Success” to individuals who have aided in the growth of the Chamber through the implementation new events and initiatives. Jeffrey Young and Art O’Neil, co-chairs of the Fire & Ice Mountain Winterfest, were recognized for their dedication and community development. Ken Howle was also recognized for his contribution as chairman of the Blue Ridge Breakaway, a new road bike race scheduled for Aug. 21.
Mountain BizWorks offers courses
Mountain BizWorks will offer a series of courses designed to help businesses thrive.
• Foundations, an eight-week business planning course, starts Aug. 9. The course covers how to create a business plan, manage personal finances and the requirements of entrepreneurship. Mondays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Oak Park Inn Conference Center in Waynesville.
• Ultimate Marketing Strategies, a 5-week course on the principles of marketing for entrepreneurs wanting to grow their business, starts Aug. 11 and continues on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at Mountain BizWorks in Sylva.
• Financial Tools for Small Business starts July 29. The five-session course starts with the basics of bookkeeping and then launches into QuickBooks Pro 2007 for more advanced financial management. Five consecutive Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Oak Park Inn Conference Center in Waynesville.
• Advanced Excel course wil be at the Sylva Mountain BizWorks office on Aug. 16 and 23 from 6 to 9 p.m.
