Red wolf exhibit gets upgrades at WNC Nature Center

out redwolfA $50,000 grant will fund improvements to the red wolf exhibit and build a covered pavilion at the Western North Carolina Nature Center in Asheville.

Changes to the red wolf exhibit will attempt to convey the importance of animal protection. A wolf den for children to crawl through, a red wolf sculpture and a video exhibit documenting the recent birth of red wolves at the Center will be some of the additions.

In May, four red wolf pups were born at the Center, which make it home to 2 percent of the world’s red wolf population. The exhibit improvements are meant to enhance the live-wolf addition to the Nature Center.

A new outdoor pavilion will also serve as a resting point for guests at the far end of the Nature Center trail and provide a covered area for education programs.

The latest grant was awarded by The Community Foundation, a nonprofit serving 18 counties in WNC. But it is just one in a series of funding streams to be used for the projects.

The Nature Center previously received a $179,000 federal grant, a $60,000 private grant and a $67,491 contribution from the Friends of the WNC Nature Center.
