WCU,
Sylva combat alcohol problems
SMN
Western
Carolina University and the town of Sylva are joining together to
combat problems associated with alcohol use by offering free training
for Sylva business owners who serve or sell alcohol, and for the staff
members who work at those businesses.
The retailers and their workers will have an opportunity to attend
one of two sessions of the Training for Intervention Procedures program,
said Robert Caruso, WCU vice chancellor for student affairs. The TIPS
program is designed to teach servers and sellers of alcohol ways of
preventing intoxication, drunken driving and underage drinking among
their customers.
The sessions are funded through an $875 grant from the Sylva Town
Board and will be held from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on two Fridays, Feb.
21 and 28, at WCUs A.K. Hinds University Center. Connie Woody
of Asheville, a certified TIPS trainer, will lead the two sessions,
which will focus on information, skills training and practice/rehearsal.
Retailers will receive formal invitations to the training sessions
in the near future, and should contact Caruso for more details at
828.227.7147.
The partnership is aimed not only at decreasing alcohol abuse at the
university, but also addressing the problem of underage drinking in
the greater community. Western received nearly $15,000 from the Distilled
Spirits Council of the United States to initiate a broad-based approach
that addresses junior high, high school and university student activities. |
