Duke Power considers dock limits on small lakes
SMN

Bear, Cedar Cliff, and Wolf lake property owners and developers are being asked for input as Duke Power considers a new policy limiting the number of docks permitted on the three small hydro reservoirs in Jackson County.

The lakes are small. Acreage at full lake at Bear is 476, Cedar Cliff is 121, and Wolf is 183.

Nearby Tanassee Creek Lake is unaffected by this draft policy. The new proposal because docks have never been permitted along its 40 acres. For perspective, Lake Glenville on the East Fork is 1,462 acres.

All of the lakes are on the East Fork of the Tuckasegee River. There are no plans for dock limitations on other Duke Power-—Nantahala Area reservoirs.

The meeting, to be held 9-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. in the Jackson County Administration Building on Jan. 13, is open to the public. All property owners on record around the lakes were notified by mail earlier this month.

Duke owns the land around the lakes between private property and the water. Adjacent property owners need a permit to build a dock on this Duke property.

“Significant new development on these very small lakes is not just coming — it’s here,” said George Galleher, Duke Power Lake Manager. “Increasing numbers of local people, visitors, and lake homeowners enjoy our three small lakes on the East Fork of the Tuckasegee River.

“Duke Power is reviewing its policies that affect the number of private docks—and therefore the number of boats — likely to be on Bear, Cedar Cliff, and Wolf Lakes,” he said.

“Our federal operating license for these hydro projects and sense of stewardship require us to protect the scenic, recreational, and environmental values of the lakes. There are no laws limiting the number of boats, jet skis, or speeds on any state waters,” said Galleher.

“Local boaters should note that there will be no reduction in parking for public boaters using the put-ins on the lakes. We believe that fishermen, pleasure boaters, and property owners do not want an overcrowded lake,” he said.
