The year following Macon Countys formation, 1829, the county
court contracted with Col. David Coleman to build a courthouse of
brick for $3,800. This structure served until 1868, when a second
courthouse replaced it.
In 1881, the county commissioners adopted specifications for a two-story
brick building and hired contractor John B. Davis to construct it
for $8,900. This structure stood until the countys current
courthouse was erected in 1972. The new courthouse was built on
the site formerly occupied by the 1881 courthouse.
