Haywood EDC mails out aid checks to businesses
SMN

The Haywood County Economic Development Commission mailed 41 checks last week to businesses devastated by the September floods.

“The checks totaled $96,000 for the business flood victims,” said EDC Executive Director Mark Clasby. “Although we realize this check does not come close to the financial need you declared, we hope that this will aid you in your business recovery.”

Clasby said businesses did not receive any funding from FEMA or the Small Business Administration (SBA). The only assistance from SBA was the possibility of low interest loans.

“Most businesses do not need another loan on top of their existing debt. I am grateful to the Haywood County commissioners and their willingness to assist the businesses of Haywood County in this time of need,” said Clasby.

Mark Swanger, chairman of the Haywood County Commissioners, said commissioners were glad to help out.

“Our board is very pleased to provide whatever support we can, to assist victims of this profound destruction, and we will continue to explore options available to improve the business climate for our county,” said Swanger.
