State Bureau of Investigation officials are expected to soon release
a report that will help determine what, if any, charges will be
brought against former Sylva town board member Anne Cabe, who is
suspected of improperly handling funds from New Savannah Baptist
Church.
The written report will be based on personal interviews and other information relating to the case, said District Attorney Mike Bonfoey.
“I don’t want the report until they do a thorough and complete investigation,” Bonfoey said.
Neither Bonfoey nor SBI media contacts would comment on the particulars of the investigation. Those involved in the case also have been directed not to speak about the investigation for legal reasons.
However, it is not suspected that Cabe misused any town funds during her time in office. Auditors have reviewed Sylva town books and have found no accounting errors, said Town Manager Jay Denton.
“There were no town assets involved in this,” Denton said.
Cabe never had access to town funds, and town payouts must carry two signatures from a combination of four town officials — Denton, town finance assistant Lynn Bryant, Mayor Brenda Oliver or board member Danny Allen.
“There’s no way anybody could have access to get funds,” Denton said.
Cabe planned to run for re-election this past November, but resigned from her seat just two weeks before the election. Cabe was appointed to the town board after her husband, Eldon Cabe, died during his term in office in March 2003. Her bid to fill the remainder of her husband’s term was unopposed in November 2003.
Cabe’s decision not to run left two seats on the board vacant,
the first of which was left empty when board member Eldridge Painter
chose not to run again. Consequently, challengers and first time
candidates Stacy Knotts and Harold Hensley automatically gained
seats on the board.
