National Park’s mission pondered
SMN

A public meeting to learn more about proposed changes to the National Park Service guidelines has been rescheduled.

An informal workshop will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 23, at the Holiday Inn in east Asheville — not on Jan. 19 at Blue Ridge Parkway Headquarters as originally scheduled.

The National Park Service has rewritten the policies that guide national parks and will be deciding later this year whether to adopt the new guidelines. Public comment is being accepted through Feb. 18.

Environmental groups claim the rewrite would erode the values of the park service and demote the traditional emphasis on conservation. Park Service leaders appointed by the current White House administration claim the rewrite is needed to clarify policies that shape decision making in national parks in the face of modern challenges.

The Holiday Inn is located off exit 55 on Interstate I-40. For more information contact Nancy Gray at 865.436.1208.
