During the month of February the Haywood County Arts Council’s
Little Gallery will display work by students from Bethel and Canton
Middle Schools in the multimedia exhibit “Identity Crisis.”
The exhibit features masks, creative place settings and theme chairs created by seventh and eighth graders.
More than 50 masks draw from mythology, as seventh graders were charged with researching monsters and gods from around the world and creating a mask to illustrate their chosen deity or make up one of their own, said art teacher Susan Zwickel.
Eight place settings help answer the question “who’s coming for dinner” with clues to their historical inspirations. For example, the Benjamin Franklin setting includes a kite with a key and scrolls, Zwickel said. Themed chairs, such as the New York City chair with its skyline, are incorporated into the place settings and round out the rest of the eighth grade exhibit.
All of the works on display are for sale with 20 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Little Gallery, 40 percent going to the creating student and the remaining 40 percent going to students’ respective schools to help buy supplies for the art program.
Little Gallery hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For
