The Western North Carolina Civil War Round Table will hold a talk
and discussion titled “The Question of Unionism in Western
North Carolina” at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, in Sylva.
Terry Garren, a Civil War buff from Arden, will discuss his new book, The Secret War: A Dramatic History of Civil War Crime in Western North Carolina. Some of Garren’s research purportedly conflicts with the prevailing historic representation.
The Civil War Round Table holds free talks open to the public the second Monday of each month. The meetings are on the second floor in the Justice Center in Sylva, located at exit 83 off U.S. 23/74. Social begins at 6:30 p.m.
The WNC Civil War Round Table is taking a field trip March 31 through April
1 to visit the Battle of Bentonville, the largest battle fought
in North Carolina and last tactical offense of the South, an attempt
to defeat the Union army of Gen. William T. Sherman as it marched
through the Carolinas in the spring of 1865. The cost of the trip
