CCC plans clean-ups in four Haywood towns
SMN

The Commission for a Clean County (CCC) has announced an ambitious project for 2002.

“We’re committing one day a month, on a rotating basis all year round, to do a major clean-up of a site in each of Haywood’s four towns,” explained JoAnna Swanson, secretary of the CCC.

The group will begin in Waynesville, on Saturday, March 16, beginning at 9:30 a.m. Of the five potential sites presented by the town, the CCC will begin with the area on Richland Street, from Depot Street to Killian. Bob Phillips, CCC chairman, hopes Haywood residents might want to participate.

“If you can pick up a few pieces of trash, come on out and help us,” said Phillps.

Because this is in the Frog Level area, some of the Frog Level merchants will team up with the CCC for the clean-up, explained Carol James, head of the Frog Level Merchants Association.

Since the group is not allowed to go on private property, the clean-up will be restricted to public streets and alongside the creek. However, Henry Foy, mayor of Waynesville, promised the town would send letters to homeowners along the route whose yards displayed trash and assorted junk asking them to clean up their properties.

In the case of elderly, sick or disabled homeowners, the CCC has volunteered to help the homeowner with the clean-up.

The April clean-up will be in Canton. Town Manager Bill Stamey will suggest possible sites where Canton would welcome the help of the CCC. Clyde and Maggie Valley will be next in line, although exact dates have not yet been chosen.
