Busy weekend slated for Haywood County Arts Council
SMN

Haywood County artist Melissa Burrell draws on her experience as an antiques dealer and vintage button collector for ideas she incorporates into the note cards and prints she produces using colored pencil, acrylic, and mixed media collage. A new exhibit of her work is being shown through the end of March at the Haywood County Arts Council’s Little Gallery.

Burrell will be honored at an artist’s reception held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 11, at The Little Gallery.

Also, the Arts Council is holding the 7th Annual Music Students’ Honors Recital on March 13.

Some of the best and brightest music students in Haywood County will perform in the recital, held at 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center in Waynesville. The recital will feature several students of area music teachers and students from the Arts Council’s Junior Appalachian Musicians program will perform in a variety of musical styles representing classical, pop, and old-time mountain music. The concert is part of the Arts Council’s Piano Series.

Martha Wright, who now resides in the Atlanta area, started the Music Students Honors Recital in 1999. It was Wright’s wish for young musicians in this area to be able to perform in a beautiful venue and experience the thrill of playing the Steinway concert grand that had just been purchased by the Haywood County Arts Council.

A reception will be held following the performances to celebrate the achievements of the students and teachers. For more information about Haywood County Arts Council programming and events, please call the office at 828.452.0593 or visit the website at www.haywoodarts.org.
