Jackson County’s Democratic Executive Committee is scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22, in Courtroom No. 1 at the Justice and Administration Center in order to select a replacement for Commissioners’ Chairman Stacy Buchanan.

Buchanan resigned effective immediately last week. No names have been released as to whom the replacement might be; however, Commissioner Brian McMahan has expressed interest in the position.

“I will accept it if appointed by the party,” McMahan said.

Commissioners have scheduled a meeting to swear in the newly appointed chairman at noon on Wednesday, March 23.

Whomever is selected will serve the remainder of Buchanan’s term. All county commissioner positions will be up for election in November of 2006. The election will represent the start of staggered terms for commissioners with the two highest vote getters serving four-year terms, and the two lowest vote getters serving two-year terms. Implementation of staggered terms will not affect the chairman’s position, meaning the chairman elected in November 2006 will serve a four-year term.

In case of bad weather, the executive committee meeting will be held at the same time and place on March 29, and the swearing in ceremony presumably rescheduled.
