WCU students’ show to air on commercial radio

Four months after launching a weekly news and viewpoints radio program broadcast by Western Carolina University’s WWCU-FM, communication majors Kyle McCurry and Eric Moore have accepted the offer to move their politically charged talk show to SuperTalk 1350 WZNN-AM in Asheville.

The student broadcast team has been producing the “Free Speech Carolinas” show at the campus radio station in Cullowhee since November.

“This is a great example of hands-on education at Western translating into a real world opportunity,” said Moore. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to turn on the mic in Asheville. We’ve got the chance now to take what our professors have taught us, plus the experience from WWCU, and run with it.”

Despite the move, the name of the program has not changed, and neither has its focus, said McCurry. “When we started ‘Free Speech Carolinas,’ I wanted it to be a place where people could make good use of their First amendment rights, regardless of the issue or whether they agreed with our positions. We’re going to stay true to that on WZNN.”

The program was added to WZNN’s midday Saturday lineup on March 12.
