The internationally recognized All-American Boys Chorus will perform “A Salute to America and Her Music” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, in the Fine and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Western Carolina University. The concert is part of the center’s third annual Galaxy of Stars Series.
The Boys Chorus is a 32-voice ensemble of singers ages 9 through 14 who perform audience favorites from America’s musical history.
Broadway tunes include “Tonight” from “West Side Story,” “Ol’ Man River” from “Showboat” and “Lida Rose” from “The Music Man.” Medleys feature sounds of the Beach Boys, tunes from the Roaring ’20s, swinging numbers from the big band era, Dixieland melodies and jazz standards. A tribute to the music of George M. Cohan and John Philip Sousa includes recognition of active and retired members of the armed forces.
The chorus incorporates backdrops, costume changes, choreography and audience participation into its production. The Los Angeles Times has described the show as “spirited” and “delightful.”
Based in Costa Mesa, Calif., the All-American Boys Chorus selects its touring chorus from among 130 members. The chorus is not a resident program; all members are from neighboring towns and cities in California. The chorus was founded in 1970 and has nearly 1,000 alumni. Its mission is to provide members with the training and opportunity to develop and exercise qualities of leadership.
The All-American Boys Chorus has performed in Russia, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Japan and China. It has appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and William Hall Master Chorale, as well as on the Disney Channel, in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade and at the Calgary Stampede and Edmonton Klondike Days. The chorus has released five albums. The latest, On Tour!, salutes America’s musical heritage.
Upcoming shows in the Galaxy of Stars Series include:
• Jim Witter: “The Long and Winding Road,” April 18. This Beatles tribute explores the complex relationship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon.
• The Percussive Dance Ensemble: “Footworks,” May 3. This performance features bluegrass music and infectious percussive dance including clogging, stepdancing and hamboning.
