Smart Roads forum part of WCU Earth Day
SMN

The Jackson County Smart Roads Alliance is sponsoring a forum on “Innovations in Transportation Solutions: Linking Campus to Community” from 1 to 3 p.m. on April 22 at the Western Carolina University Student Center. The forum is part of a series of campus events sponsored by WCU’s Biology Club and the Canary Coalition in celebration of Earth Day.

The Transportation Forum will provide a look into the future including an expanded “scenic” transit route from Cullowhee to Sylva along the proposed greenway segment from Jack the Dipper to the Webster bridge. Jackson County’s master greenway vision includes a 12-mile segment along the river from the campus to Dillsboro. Jackson County Transit is in the early stages of providing a regular shuttle service between campus and the Town of Sylva.

Representatives from Appalachian State, UNCA, and Warren Wilson College in Black Mountain will participate in the forum. All of these institutions have been involved in “partnerships” with local transit systems. Chris Turner, Transportation Director with AppalCart, a transit system that serves ASU’s students and public, will discuss elements of success for public transit on campus.

Other participants will include Chuck Norris and David Bates with Jackson County Transit and Greenways, Richard McHargue from the town of Sylva, and Eva Ritchey from “Citizens for Transportation Alternatives” from Henderson County. WCU planners have also been invited to participate in the forum.

Other Earth Day events include a keynote address by 11th District Democratic congressional candidate Patsy Keever and a water quality forum sponsored by the Watershed Association of the Tuckasegee River. The Earth Day events are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
