Photographer shares his return to Nepal
SMN

Haywood County photographer and traveler John Vavruska will present a slide show about his trek through Nepal at 7 p.m. April 14 at the library in Waynesville.

Vavruska and his friends, including Himalayan expedition leader and mountaineer Daniel Mazur, journeyed through the Sherpa village of Patale south of Mount Everest and to the remote village of Nirmalidanda where Vavruska lived as a Peace Corps volunteer 21 years ago. During his time with the Peace Corps Vavruska built a gravity flow drinking water system.

On Vavruska’s return to the village he became reacquainted with many villagers. He will discuss the changes he observed in Nepal and share and compare photographs he made of the same landscapes and villager friends, both then and now.

In addition to the presentation, Vavruska will be collecting donations to purchase medical supplies for a new health clinic in Patale and to upgrade a water supply and sanitation project. These projects directly impact and will benefit 400 families in Nirmalidanda.

There will be Nepali handicrafts for sale, with all proceeds being returned to the village for these two projects.
