• Wilderness First Aid I

April 16-17; April 30-May 1; May 16-17; May 21-22

Originally called Backcountry First Aid, this course covers the basics and the most common traumatic, medical, and environmental issues that occur in the backcountry.

• Advanced Wilderness First Aid

May 23-26

This course covers Wilderness First Aid I, plus additional training in spinal injury management, head, chest, and abdominal traumas, as well as major medical emergencies such as cardiac and stroke.

• Wilderness First Responder

April 23-May 1; May 9-17; May 13-20; May 29-June 6; June 6-9

Rapidly becoming the industry standard for trip leaders, this course gives in-depth training into trauma, medical and extreme environmental issues. It goes beyond Wilderness First Aid with ample hands-on rescue scenarios achieved through play-acting. There is also an evening mock rescue where students perform as a member of a rescue team.

• Backcountry trip leader school

May 25-28

A 4-day course that prepares instructors for the myriad responsibilities and industry standards of running short wilderness trips. Leadership, trip planning, Leave No Trace workshop, and health and prevention are course cornerstones.

Students should expect outdoor community living, community meal preparation, an outdoor classroom, a fast-paced curriculum that runs rain or shine, student teaching opportunities, discussion of current issues in the outdoor industry, evaluation by their peers, and a unique opportunity to learn in a fun and interactive atmosphere.

• Leave No Trace: master educator

April 25-29; May 23-27

This course teaches Leave No Trace ethics, skills, and techniques specific to the Southeastern Appalachian environment for various outdoor activities, such as backpacking, river travel, climbing, mountain biking, horse packing, and more.

• American Canoe Association Swiftwater Rescue

April 22-24; May 28-29

This course teaches river rescue philosophy, trip planning, prevention, and simple, quick, and rescues with the least risk. Participants have hands-on practice time, and advanced rescues including Rescue PFDs and mechanical advantage.

• Heartsaver CPR, sanctioned by American Heart Association

April 15, April 29, May 15, or May 21; 6 to 10 p.m.

A four-hour CPR training course for individuals who will be working primarily with people ages 8 years and older. “CPR” includes training in Rescue Breathing, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, and relieving Foreign Body Airway Obstructions.
