| << Back 5/1/02 Canary Coalition plans two clean-air vigils SMN The Canary Coalition will stage a 28-hour Clean Air Vigil and Voters Summit on Mountain Air Quality at Pack Square in Asheville on May 10-11 from Friday at 6 p.m. through Saturday at 10 p.m. There will be an open mike for people to speak, tell stories, read poetry, sing songs, say prayers. Legendary folksinger Peggy Seeger, former Asheville Mayor Leni Sitnick, Jackson County Commis-sion Chairman Jay Denton, poet Thomas Rain Crowe, health expert Dr. James Biddle and many others will participate. Volunteers are needed to stay through the night on Friday. The event will coincide with the Southern Governors Conference on Mountain Air Quality that will take place the same weekend in Charlotte. As part of the vigil, the Canary Coalition will be holding the Voters Summit on Mountain Air Quality on Saturday, in which citizens can express their concerns about air quality in written or verbal form. The Canary Coalition will take the comments to Gov. Easley and key legislators. All people concerned about the effects of air pollution on the health of our children (children are encouraged to speak out too) and the future of the region are encouraged to attend. Come to speak, listen, sign the petition, or just drop off a letter to the governor. There will be a second clean air vigil in Raleigh on May 28-29 to greet the opening of the 2002 legislative session. Anyone who plans to participate in this event should contact the Canary Coalition.
