GED classes offered

SMN

Mountain Projects now offers GED classes in its Sylva computer lab from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

The classes are fully sanctioned by Southwestern Community College. The learning lab has a certified teacher with an additional volunteer teacher providing one-on-one tutoring. The lab provides a relaxed atmosphere for students to learn basic skills and individual instruction that will help them to achieve their goal of passing the GED test. The lab is open to both youth and adult students although the programs are operated somewhat differently.

Students enrolled in the Jackson County Youth Program (ages 18-21) have the opportunity to earn $400 in bonuses. They will receive a $100 bonus for achieving at least one grade-level advancement in both reading and math. An additional bonus of $200 will be available upon successful completion of the GED testing process.

The adult program is a self-sufficiency project with full-time employment as the primary goal. Services for this population are limited to employment, training assistance and gas vouchers for transportation to class.

Upon completion of the GED program students will receive assistance with job search/placement or referrals for post-secondary education. Full-time employment is the ultimate goal of both programs. For more information call Susie Bryson at 828.586.2345.
