What: Hellbender scavanger hunt with the Highlands Biological Center.

Where: Davidson River
Highlights: The hellbender is the largest salamander in the United States, a heafty creature that grows two feet long or more and easily weighs three or four pounds. Highlands Nature Center Director Patrick Brannon will lead a hunt for hellbenders in the Davidson River near Brevard, a known stomping ground for the hellbender. The gear needed for venturing into the river is provided. The day will begin at the Nature Center with a short lecture, then a carpool to the Davidson. Cost is $25, and includes lunch and equipment.
