| << Back 6/19/02 Great Ducky Dash to raise money for New Century Scholars, Franklin Chamber SMN On July 4th, the Macon County New Century Scholars will team up with the Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce to put on a Great Ducky Dash. Cash prizes in the amount of $300, $200 and $100 will be up for grabs at the race, which will be held as part of the Macon County July 4th Celebration. Each duck can be adopted for $5, and it will bear a number on its belly. Ducks will be dropped into the Cartoogechaye Creek at 6 p.m., and the first three ducks to cross the finish line will win their adoptive owners one of the cash prizes. Providing the cash prizes this year are The Franklin Press and Harrison Construction. In the past, this has been an annual fund-raising event for the Franklin Area Chamber exclusively. But this year, the chamber is sharing proceeds with the New Century Scholars program, which provides selected area students with a last-dollar scholarship to Southwestern Community College. New Century Scholars from Macon County will be working at the race, and they will also be selling tickets during the days events at the Macon County Recreation Park. In addition to the cash prizes for the top three finishers, area businesses are providing other prizes to be awarded. At the ticket booth, the New Century Scholars will have a ring-toss game to raise money for scholarships. They will also sell Great Ducky Dash T-shirts that have been donated by National Textile. In advance of the race, ducks may be adopted at the Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce or at the Macon County Schools Administration Building. You can also adopt a duck from the Southwestern Community College Foundation by calling Becky Medford at 586.4091 or 800.447.4091, ext. 218. On race day, the New Century Scholars will sell duck adoption tickets from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Macon County Recreation Park. |
