A weekend of farms, fresh food and fun for mountain area residents is scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday as part of the Seventh Annual Family Farm Tour. The purpose of the event is to showcase local farm products and a wide variety of faming operations in seven counties.

Twenty-four farms are participating this year, displaying fruits, vegetables, herbs, alternative crops, flowers, livestock, bees and greenhouse operations. The emphasis is on local farmers working with sustainable and organic methods seeking to demonstrate the high potential local farm economies have in the region. More than 600 participants joined the tour last year and recieved “hands-on” information on a wide variety of crops and production methods of local farms. This year participants can see everything from underutilized root crops, to llama farming, garlic and salad mix growing, heirloom varieties of vegetables, rows of ripe raspberries and can learn about drip irrigation, composting, raised beds and chicken “tractors.”
