Transportation task force plans July 1 meeting
SMN

The Jackson County Transportation Task Force will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 1, in the Jackson County Justice and Administration Center courtroom for a preliminary discussion of collected data.
The task force will meet again at the same time and place on Monday, July 12, with N.C. Department of Transportation engineering supervisor of statewide planning branch Beverly Williams.
The task force held its first meeting in April at which time they decided to expand the county’s study area to include communities such as Whittier and divvy up workloads for collecting local employment data to show commuting patterns in the region.
Representatives from the DOT Statewide Planning Branch, Rural Planning Organization, Jackson Smart Roads Task Force, Smart Roads Coalition, Jackson County Transportation Board, Southwestern Community College, Western Carolina University, the Towns of Sylva, Dillsboro, Webster and Village of Forest Hills pooled their ideas for the study area, considering factors such as potential development and high traffic routes.
The resulting study map pulled in roads such as the old Highway 107 and additional portions of U.S. 441, as well as south toward East LaPorte and north toward Whittier.
