Rolling up their sleeves

SMN

The agreement between the International Mountain Biking Association and the National Park Service to explore the possibility of mountain biking in national parks lays out who is responsible for what. Here’s some of what each side agreed to:

International Mountain Biking Association

• provide technical expertise in mountain bike trail design, construction and maintenance

• recruit, train, organize and supervise volunteers from the mountain bike community to build, repair, maintain and restore trails

• advocate safety

• advocate low impact riding

• advocate proper trail etiquette toward other park visitors and wildlife

• implement trail patrols, docent programs, and other education efforts

National Park Service

• cooperate with IMBA and the mountain bike community to identify mutually beneficial projects

• compile a list of what National Park units currently allow mountain biking and where (as funding permits)

• identify opportunities for trail patrols, docent programs, safety training, and other educational efforts in units of the National Park System (as funding permits).

• conduct studies on the impact of mountain biking on natural and cultural resources, scenic and aesthetic values, wildlife and visitor experience (as funding permits).
