Classical music, art come to Swain
SMN

The Swain County Center for the Arts will feature an afternoon of classical music and art at 3 p.m. July 10.

Franklin residents Ed and Kathy Hill have been teaching music in Western North Carolina for the past 13 years. They are active in the music program of the First United Methodist Church in Franklin as well as in various community functions.

Ed Hill studied for the ministry with a double major in Bible and Theology at Faith Baptist College in Iowa and then went to seminary at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Hill will perform piano music by Beethoven, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schubert, and Schumann. Kathy will join her husband to play a Sonata for violin and piano by Hindemith. Ten-year old Mary Allison Shell, one of Hill’s piano students, will perform works by Bach and Daguin.

Immediately following the concert, there will be a reception for artist Toni Wright Davidson. Born and raised in Bryson City, Davidson’s inspiration draws from fellow artists’ Gale Breedlove Garrett and Elizabeth Ellison’s interpretations of the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains. Her art career began with a basic drawing course 12 years ago and — through workshops and private lessons — has flourished to include watercolor and sumi-e paintings of flowers, landscapes, still life, pets, friends and family.
