Apple Country bike tour returns to Hendersonville

SMN

The 17th Annual Apple Country Bicycle Tour begins at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1. This year the ride starts at the parking lot at Atkinson Elementary School, 2510 Old Kanuga Road, near Hendersonville.

As in previous years, the tour winds along paved country roads through Henderson County’s apple orchards and scenic farmland. Riders may choose from three routes: a fun four-mile ride designed for families and beginning riders; a moderate ride of about 20 miles for the more experienced; or a challenging 45-mile route with several steep climbs and fast descents.

The popular bicycle tour, which occurs rain or shine, is part of the North Carolina Apple Festival held each year in Hendersonville. Proceeds from the tour benefit the Environmental and Conservation Organization (ECO).

Pre-registration fee for the longer rides — either the 45-mile challenge or the 20-mile ride — is $15 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under. Registration the day of the event for these rides is $20 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under. The four-mile fun ride is $5 per person. All children under 14 must be accompanied by a riding adult. Check-in and registration will begin at 7:45 a.m. Helmets are required on all participants.

Registration forms will soon be available at area bike shops and outdoor stores and at the Hendersonville Visitor’s Center, 201 S. Main St. Forms may be requested by sending a SASE to the ECO office, 119-B Third Avenue West, Hendersonville, N.C ., 28792. Complete information and a print-out registration form is available on the ECO web site: www.eco-wnc.org.
