| << Back 8/21/02 Old-time music, ice cream social planned SMN Hogtown Squealers Old-Time Band will play a program of traditional bluegrass and mountain music at 3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 25, Tartan Hall at Franklins First Presbyterian Church. An old-fashioned ice cream social will be held with the music program. Since forming in the early 1980s, the Hogtown Squealers have become a fixture at festivals, contra dances and community celebrations throughout the region. The band has won many awards, including first place in the Old-Time Band category at Ashevilles Mountain Dance and Folk Festival in 1994 and 1996, first place in the Heart of Brevards Old-Time Music Competition in 1998, 2000 and 2001, and third place in the 2000 N.C. State Fair Music Competition. Band members are John von Stein, accordion; Rob Olrech, guitar; Gary Wells, banjolin; Tom Anderson, fiddle; and Chris Riser, standup bass. In addition to the Squealers old-time music, the audience will enjoy ice cream sundaes courtesy of Mayfield Dairy Farms. Advance tickets are on sale at the Franklin Chamber of Commerce at $7 adult, $4 youth under age 16, and $20 family (two adults and their young children). Admission at the door is $8 adult, $5 youth. Doors open at 2:30. Tartan Hall is on the First Presbyterian Church campus, corner of Harrison Avenue and Church Street, in downtown Franklin.
