According to a release from Post Commander Ray Wyatt, the commemoration ceremony will honor the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, airline flight takeovers, and the American military service personnel who have died in the battle against terrorism as well as those members of the services who continue to fight. The event will start at noon at the Post on Legion Drive (behind Bogarts restaurant), but the Post leaders asked the town of Waynesville to sound its emergency horn at four different times to mark events that occurred last year on Sept. 11: at 8:45 a.m., when the first plane went into the World Trade Towers; at 9:03 a.m., when a hijacked plane hit the second tower; at 9:43 a.m., when a hijacked plane flew into the Pentagon; and at 10 a.m., when a hijacked plane crashed in the Pennsylvania countryside. On the same day, Western Carolina University is holding a commemorative ceremony. Officials there are asking people directly affected by the events of Sept. 11 to call Dr. Mary Kay Bauer at 828.227.3275. Speeches and other events will be held at 5:30 p.m. on the lawn of the University Center, and a concert will be held at 8 p.m. |
