Cashiers incorporation vote under way

SMN

Officials with the Jackson County Board of Elections say that 29 votes had been cast as of 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 5, for the Aug. 12 incorporation referendum that could create the Village of Cashiers.

Tuesday (Aug. 5) was the last day for mail in absentee ballots. Early voters can vote at the Board of Election office in Sylva through 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9.

According to Jackson County Board of Elections Director Lisa Lovedahl-Lehman, registered voters within the incorporation district are automatically registered for the Aug. 12 election. Registration for non-registered voters closed July 18, but Lovedahl-Lehman said that registered voters not on the offical roll who felt they were within the incorporation boundary could show up at the poll and vote a “provisional ballot.”

“There will be a map at the polls and if voters can identify the parcel where they live and it is within the boundary, they can vote a provisional ballot. We will then have three days to verify their residency,” Lovedahl-Lehman said.

There are 724 registered voters within the proposed incorporation area. The polling place is the Cashiers Fire Department, and polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
