| << Back 8/17/05 SCC Cashiers center to house craft lab SMN Southwestern Community College has doubled the space of its satellite classroom facility in Cashiers this semester after moving into a new building. The new facility is a former residence and was purchased by Jackson County for use by SCC. It is 4,000 square feet plus a 540-square-foot garage, which will be converted to a crafts lab this fall. Pottery, floral design, watercolor, dance and wildflower identification are some of the personal enrichment and continuing education courses that will be offered. Academic offerings include instruction in nurses aid, English as a Second Language and GED. “We are very flexible and always try to respond to what the people in our service area want and need,” said Stacy France, the new director for the Cashiers Center. “If an individual or group has an interest in a subject or activity and we can find an instructor, we’ll do our best to offer a class for them. We are always open to suggestions for classes.” The facility houses a computer lab, four classrooms, a meeting room and two administration offices. A high-speed Internet connection will link the Cashiers Center with the main campus in Sylva. The building is the former Nichols home located at 217 Frank Allen Road.
