Up for election ... Bryson City

SMN

Mayor — pick one

Talmadge Jones, 60, DSS supervisor

Jones has been an alderman for 10 years. He took over the post of mayor this year when the mayor stepped down for personal reasons.

“I feel like I could help keep our town on the progressive force we’ve been on the for the past 10 years. We’ve still got a long ways to go. If someone else came along I thought could do a better job, I would say, ‘Hey, knock yourself out,’” Jones said.

Jeramy Shuler, 33, auto towing business

Shuler said the town has fallen behind in its infrastructure, namely the sewer treatment plant, which is his main mission in running.

“If I get elected and I can see the sewer plant brought up to state requirements, I would be tickled to death and happy with the term,” said Shuler. Shuler also wants to add police officers and increase their salary.

Alderman – pick two

Stephanie Treadway, 36, insurance agent with Nationwide

Treadway has been an alderman for six years.

“I like serving the community. I have enjoyed the time I have been on the board. I would like to see more of the streetscape projects,” Treadway said.

Tom Reidmiller, 54, Ford dealership owner

Reidmiller was appointed to the board six months ago to fill the vacancy created when Jones moved up to fill the mayor’s seat.

“I thought that my business experience would be helpful in their decision making,” said Reidmiller. Reidmiller does not have a campaign platform, nor does he envision any specific issues on the town’s horizon.

“I don’t want to comment on what might or might not be,” Reidmiller said.

Trey Burns, 22, developer and Realtor with Trey Burns Realty

Burns admits he’s young, but said it’s an asset.

“Being the age I am, I am energetic and I have new ideas for the city that will help the people,” Burns said. “I think I will bring a new energy to Bryson City.” Burns said he’s “always been interested in politics.”

Curtis Evans, 49

Evans has been running Tuckasegee Surveying for 30 years. Why is he running?

“Well, it’s one of those things where you are talking to people saying we need to do this and we need to do that, and eventually you need to put up or shut up,” Evans said.
