Canary Coalition receives grant from the Fund for Southern Communities

SMN

The Canary Coalition has received a $1,500 grant from the Fund for Southern Communities toward the purchase of video presentation equipment. This grassroots clean air advocacy coalition has developed a Power Point presentation to inform groups and communities about the sources of air pollution plaguing the Appalachian region and defining a path that will lead to cleaner air.

“This is a good start for the equipment fund,” said Avram Friedman, executive director. “Perhaps this money will interest businesses or large donors in offering matching funds so we can get the equipment we really need. A good quality video projector has a price tag of about $5,000 and we can use more than one so we can make presentations to groups in more than one community on the same day.”

Friedman said The Canary Coalition has expanded its activities into other states and regions as the organization works toward federal legislation and legislation in other states to compliment the recently passed N.C. Clean Smokestacks Act. There are currently members in 10 states.
