The Asheville Art Museum will present a groundbreaking overview
of the life and work of Rev. McKendree Robbins Long (1888 –
1976) p.m. Sept. 6-Dec. 1. Long is the grandfather of the well-known
painter, fresco artist and Asheville resident Ben Long.
The exhibition will be accompanied by several public programs. At
6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, the museum will present A Conversation
with the Long Family. Benjamin F. Long IV, McKendree Robbins
Long III, Marie Mickey and other members of the Long family will
share remembrances of their grandfather. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov.
10, David Steel, curator of European Art at the North Carolina Museum
of Art, will offer a glimpse into the life and art of Rev. Long,
discussing his education and influences including old master illuminations.
All programs are free with museum admission.
This exhibition is organized by Van Every Gallery, Davidson College
and the N.C. Museum of Art. A catalogue is available for purchase
in the Museum Shop.
The Asheville Art Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through
Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m on Sunday. The Museum is open every
Friday until 8 p.m. Special docent-guided tour packages are available
for groups and students. The Museum is located in the Pack Place
Education, Arts and Science Center, 2 South Pack Square, in downtown
Asheville. Admission to the Museum is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors,
students with ID and for children 4-15 (children age three and younger
are admitted free). Members are admitted free to the museum. The
Asheville Art Museum receives general operating support for its
programs from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal
agency, the United Art Campaign of the Asheville Area Arts Council
and the North Carolina Arts Council, a state agency in addition
to many other foundation, business and individual supporters.
