Birds:

Despite a soggy weekend, those who searched reported a number of migrants still passing through the region.

° Great egret, great blue heron, killdeer, turkey vulture, black vulture and eastern phoebe, (Lake Emory 9/13, Don Hendershot)

° American kestrel ( fields along NC 28 just north of Macon County airport 9/13, Don Hendershot)

° Broad-winged hawk, ruffed grouse, wild turkey, Swainson’s thrush, hermit thrush, veery, blue-gray gnatcatcher, magnolia warbler, Tennessee warbler, black-and-white warbler, black-throated blue warbler, black-throated green warbler, hooded warbler, northern parula, chestnut-sided warbler, worm-eating warbler, blackburnian warbler, blackpoll warbler, scarlet tanager, and rose-breasted grosbeak (among species recorded 9/14.15 during migrant survey at Balsam Mountain Preserve, Don Hendershot & Bob Olthoff)

° Yellow-headed blackbird (Phinizy Swamp Nature Preserve Augusta, GA 9/15 reported from Carolina birds listserv)


Wildflowers:

°Sneezeweed, Helenium autumnale; cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis; American burnet, Sanguisorba canadensis; jewelweed; Impatiens capensis; beggar’s-ticks, Bidens vulgata; bulrush, Scirpus cyperinus; beak rush, Rhynchospora globularis; and Joe-pye weed, Eupatorium fistulosum ( roadside at intersection of McCoy Rd. & Rose Creek Rd. and along the Little T next to the McCoy Bridge in Macon County, 9/13 Don Hendershot)
