| << Back 9/25/02 Darnell Farms Corn Maze open to public SMN The 2002 Darnell Farms Corn Maze in Bryson City is now open. Amid this working farms fields of tomatoes, corn and peppers is an eight-acre maze of tall corn, in which visitors find their way through a labyrinth of paths. Seen from a nearby mountaintop or from the air, these paths form a design of a farmer and his horse plowing the ground the old-fashioned way. The design is a tribute to Smoky Mountains farming traditions. There are numbered signs throughout the twists, turns and dead ends of the Corn Maze. Each visitor is given a map and a passport, which has multiple-choice questions and clues for each sign. By guessing the correct answers the visitor learns which way to turn to make his way through the maze. The adventure is an easy walk and usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. To get to the 2002 Corn Maze, take Exit 69 off U.S. 74. Turn right, look for the Darnell Farms sign, turning left on Walker Woody Road and drive for about two miles along the river. At the stop sign turn right over the bridge, and Darnell Farms is an immediate right. Admission is $8 for adults; $5 for children ages 6-11; and free for children under 5 with an adult. Special rates are available and can be booked in advance to school, church or family groups who wish to tour the maze together by phoning the Darnell Farms Produce Stand, 828.468.2376. The maze will be open to the public through the beginning of November. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday and noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. |
